We’re a small worm farm in SLO County sharing our passion for worms, the benefits of vermicomposting, and fishing.

Our story

How it started.

I began vermicomposting when I was a child with my two sisters. Our dad taught us about vermicomposting, utilizing kitchen waste, and all the wonderful benefits of worms. We’d package our worms up once a month in recycled milk cartons and sell them out of our wagon to friends in the neighborhood for their gardens and fishing adventures.

Our dad also loved to fish, so it was a perfect way to make sure we had the best bait when we’d spend a day on the lake!

How it’s going.

It’s been about 25 years since then. As an adult with an aspiring green thumb, a love for fishing, and a desire to conserve any way I can, I decided to get back in the worm business.

Honey’s Bait is still a family affair as I recruit my fiancé, brother, nieces, and nephews to help feed and pack our worms for our local market. We currently sell bait worms to bait shops within San Luis Obispo County.

Where we’re headed.

We began two years ago selling bait worms to local bait shops. We focus on providing bait worms in a package that is fully compostable in backyard settings. Our goal is to do our part to preserve our lakes for generations to come by cutting down on litter and providing the best bait worms available.

We are now expanding to provide vermicomposting starter kits as an easy entry into vermicomposting and all its benefits.

Our worms

Red Wigglers.

Red Wigglers are small red worms that are perfect bait for small fish like bluegill, crappie, and lake trout.

Red worms also make great composting worms because they are voracious eaters and are able to reproduce quickly and double their population in 60 days.

European Nightcrawlers

These nightcrawlers are mid-sized worms that make great bait for larger fish like bass, crappie and trout.

European crawlers make great composting worms and are resilient to extreme heat and cold. They are the worms we use for our vermicomposting kits. They can double their population in about three months.

Canadian Nightcrawlers

Canadian crawlers are a favorite among fishermen in our region. They are a large worm that can get up to eight inches in length and 1/4 inch thick. They are great for fishing for large lake fish like bass and catfish.

These worms are very particular and cannot be farmed in our area of California. We import these worms weekly from Canada.
